Crises continue to leave their imprint on the beginning of the 21st century in a variety of political, economic and militaristic areas. The impact has been at times devastating to individuals, groups, organizations, countries and even the entire world. More than ever we all need the capacity to lead in a crisis.
What Is A Crisis?
For the purpose of this discussion, a crisis is defined as a significant, abrupt and negative change in the course of events. The cascading stock market, the dramatic loss of jobs and the attack on New York City all represent crises. Closer to home, crises include the dramatic loss of income or the unexpected death of a family member.
How To Effectively Lead In A Crisis
Here are six critical factors in leading a group through a crisis:
- Establish A Loyal Braintrust
Since crises at some level happen virtually every week, the first key is to proactively prepare for their eventuality. The leader must know who he or she will turn to for advice when the crucial moment occurs. Once you know your primary confidantes, then work to build a trusting relationship with them. You need their honest input at the moment of impact.
- Define The Current Situation
Avoid the natural tendency to erupt emotionally, and calmly clarify the current situation. Gather the facts and lay them out for all members of your inner circle to see clearly.
- Clarify The Desired Outcome
Ask each member of your advisory group this question, "Knowing what we now know, what do you believe is the single most important outcome for us to achieve and why did you select it?" Listen carefully to each person, have open discussion and narrow the desired result down to the two or three highest priority outcomes.
- Gather Input On A Specific Issue
Identify all of the key issues blocking the achievement of any of the three desired outcomes. Analyze an overview of all of these important issues and narrow the list to the single most important issue to be resolved first. Then ask the question, "What can we do to resolve this issue?" Give everyone a few minutes to gather their thoughts. Then begin to gather input, hold a discussion and narrow the focus to a realistic game plan.
- Make A Decision And Act Decisively
Once the facts have been clarified, the outcomes identified, the issues laid bare and the action plan defined, the leader MUST make a decision and communicate that decision clearly and in definite terms.
- Stay Calm, Focused and Flexible
As you move forward, project a sense of calmness: urgent but still in control of your emotions. Remain focused on achieving the three desired outcomes and overcoming the major immediate issue. Also, remain flexible with your action plan. New information can generate a new and more effective plan.
Conclusion
While some people may argue that this process is far too cumbersome, I believe the straightforward methodical approach generates far better results in far less time. It reduces the likelihood of reacting in emotional and sporadic ways, gains insights from a variety of trusted counselors and generates a clear, logical action plan.
In the end, the objective is to resolve the crisis as effectively as possible, but not necessarily with the most fanfare.
